Les Pékinois connaissent les nombreux visages de leur ville, de l’effervescence des quartiers d’affaires futuristes à la verdure des parcs comme Jingshan où s’élèvent de paisibles pagodes. L’immensité de la place Tian’anmen est toujours aussi impressionnante, tout comme la largeur des artères telles que l’avenue Chang’an. En parcourant les interminables allées de la Cité interdite, on s’imagine recevoir les honneurs réservés aux dignitaires.

La perfection céleste du Temple du Ciel et la puissance historique qui continue d’émaner du mausolée de Mao Zedong invitent à la contemplation. Quelques minutes plus tard, vous voilà en train d’examiner les brochettes de scorpions frits de Wangfujing ou d’explorer les splendides magasins et centres commerciaux de Sanlitun aux côtés de l’élite locale.

Une vie ne suffirait sans doute pas pour apprécier vraiment les 3 000 ans de trésors culturels exposés dans les musées et galeries de Pékin. Au musée national de Chine, les objets de jade et de porcelaine racontent le passé impérial du pays, tandis que les installations d’art moderne investissent les anciens hangars industriels de l’Espace 798. Autour du très coloré temple de Yonghe, une culture avant-gardiste s’épanouit dans les étroites ruelles des hútòng et leurs cours secrètes.

Pour les habitants de Pékin, le meilleur de la culture chinoise se savoure à table. La richesse culinaire de la capitale provient des quatre coins du pays. On ne se lasse jamais des classiques comme le canard laqué et la fondue chinoise, accompagnés d’une soupe ou d’un bouillon bien relevé au poivre du Sichuan.
