JINZHONG

Ancient dynasties, cinematic landscapes and the soul of Shanxi

A City Where History Meets Vitality

Jinzhong is a city of quiet confidence and cinematic grandeur. Nestled in the heart of Shanxi Province, its skyline blends modern urban ambition with the golden rooftops of centuries-old merchant manors. Culture enthusiasts come for the legendary Pingyao Ancient City — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and stay to wander its 2,700-year-old city walls as the setting sun turns the ramparts amber.

Film lovers will recognise Pingyao’s cobblestone streets from Zhang Yimou’s acclaimed Raise the Red Lantern , and every spring the city hosts the celebrated Pingyao International Photography Festival, drawing artists and storytellers from across the globe.

Merchants, Dynasties and Living Traditions

Jinzhong is the cradle of China’s legendary Shanxi merchant dynasties — the Jin Shang — who once bankrolled the country’s economy. Their extraordinary legacy lives on in the sprawling Qiao Family Compound, a fortress-like manor of 313 rooms that reads like a textbook of Qing Dynasty architecture and mercantile power. The Wang Family Compound rivals it in scale and grandeur, its carved wooden eaves and stone lions standing as proud as ever.

At the Shanxi Museum of the Rishengchang Exchange Shop, visitors trace the birth of China’s first draft bank — a financial revolution that predated Western banking models. Local artisans still practise intricate lacquerware carving and push-silk embroidery, skills passed down through generations in workshops tucked behind Pingyao’s ancient gates.

Valleys, Monasteries and Mountain Spirits

Jinzhong is a gateway to some of China’s most breathtaking highland scenery. The Mian Mountain Scenic Area offers dramatic gorges, cascading waterfalls and ancient Taoist temples clinging to sheer cliff faces — a meditative escape from the city’s bustle.

Northeast lies the Tian Long Mountain Grotto, where Buddhist stone carvings from the Northern Qi Dynasty emerge from the rock face in extraordinary detail. The vast Wulong Valley draws hikers seeking solitude among pine forests and wild mountain flora, while the Yellow River’s upper tributaries carve golden loess landscapes that change character with every season.

Night Markets, Vinegar and the Flavours of Shanxi

Jinzhong’s culinary identity is bold and proud. Shanxi is China’s undisputed kingdom of vinegar — and locals will tell you no meal is complete without a drizzle of aged Qingxu vinegar, produced here for over 3,000 years. Ancient street markets serve steaming bowls of knife-cut noodles (dao xiao mian ), hand-pulled to order right before your eyes, alongside braised pork with vermicelli and fluffy steamed mantou buns.

Modern restaurants in Jinzhong’s new districts plate elevated Shanxi cuisine alongside contemporary Chinese and international menus. But the truest flavours are found at dusk, when the lantern-lit night markets of Pingyao come alive — fragrant, noisy and utterly unforgettable.
